We scientists face a lot of ill-informed criticism. Every scientist I know cares sincerely about animal welfare. The people who think we shouldn’t do animal work at all are often the same people who expect doctors to provide good healthcare.
I can’t speak about what happens in your country but where I am (Britain) it’s incredibly difficult to get a licence for animal work in the lab. The strict rules, and the long forms we have to fill in, are available to view on the Home Office website. I think it’s right that things should be so difficult for us but I wish the general public would stop jumping to conclusions.
